does choosing home over the ice-skating rink make me dedicated?
I wandered downstairs for a break not 5 mins ago, and poked my head into the room where my sister and her friend was watching some sci-fi shoot-em'-up. They turned when I came in, and to my surprise asked where I had been that day. When I told them in my room, her friend surmised that I 'really am a dedicated nerd.' I shook my head and laughed, but as I went back upstairs, I started wondering about this.
I've never really thought about myself as a nerd, so I consulted google.
Wikipaedia told me: Nerd (pronounced /ˈnɜrd/) is a term often bearing a derogatory connotation or stereotype, that refers to a person who passionately pursues intellectual activities, esoteric knowledge, or other obscure interests rather than engaging in more social or popular activities. Therefore, a nerd is often excluded from physical activity and considered a loner by peers or will tend to associate with like-minded people.
and the Urban Dictionary said:
1. One whose IQ exceeds his weight.
2. An individual persecuted for his superior skills or intellect, most often by people who fear and envy him.
3. An 'individual', i.e. a person who does not conform to society's beliefs that all people should follow trends and do what their peers do. Often highly intelligent but socially rejected because of their obesssion with a given subject, usually computers. Unfortunately, nerds seem to have problems breeding, to the detriment of mankind as a whole.
"Nerds are clearly superior to us in every way.. Let's worship them as our Gods"
4. A stereotypical label used to describe a person that is socially inadequate. A four letter word, but a six figure income.

Think Bill Gates, but typically on a smaller scale.
5. A person who gains pleasure from amassing large quantities of knowledge about subjects often too detailed or complicated for most other people to be bothered with.
Often mistaken for Geeks, who aspire to become nerds, yet lack the intelligence, and end up giving nerds a bad name due to their poor social skills.
Non-nerds are often scared of nerds, due to their detailed knowledge, and therefore seemingly high levels of intelligence - and subsequently denegrate them as much as possible as often as possible.
Nerds exist covertly within the fabric of society, often choosing to 'nerd it up' in private or in the company of fellow nerds. It is for this reason they are feared the most - unlike geeks, who are easily identified, nerds can only be found out when casual conversation reaches a subject that they like nerding.
6. the group of people who will most likely make a life changing invention that will radically change the world. the computer was invented by a nerd. the macintosh/apple and windows were invetned by nerds. jocks and normal people have no claim to civilization except for being the hard labor. nerds actually do the thinking. so jocks, f*** you, and go eat your steroids 5. Nerds created almost everything that civilzation needs, such as computers, calculators, windows, etc.
7. A person who is intensely interested in a particular hobby or topic.

Rich is quite a computer nerd.
Ask Bill; he's the car nerd around here.
Okay, so there were 33 pages on the definition of 'nerd' in the Urban dictionary. This was just the first.
but basically what was said is that nerds are smart people, and are generally socially inept.
To my horror, this describes exactly who I am of late...
But it also says that being a nerd isn't such a bad thing. That sure, you get shit, but who doesn't?
So I guess what I'm really saying is that:
I'm officially a nerd, and damn well proud of it!!!!
